Cystitis/UTI – test and treat

What we offer

Testing and treatment for cystitis and urinary tract infections.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common. They can be painful and uncomfortable but they usually pass within a few days or can be easily treated with a course of antibiotics.

Typical symptoms include a burning or stinging feeling when you pass urine, needing to go more often or more urgently than usual, urine that looks cloudy, and pain low down in your tummy. Cystitis is the name given to a UTI that affects the bladder.

With our test and treat service you can be seen by a pharmacist without waiting for a GP appointment. The consultation takes place in our private consultation room. The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms and your medical history and, where appropriate, may test a sample of your urine. If treatment is suitable they can supply it there and then, along with advice on easing your symptoms and lowering the chance of the infection coming back.

Antibiotics are not always needed. Mild infections can clear up on their own, and drinking plenty of fluids, resting and taking a suitable painkiller can help while they do. The pharmacist will explain which option is right for you and why.

This service is not suitable for everyone and eligibility criteria apply. If the pharmacist feels you need to be seen by your GP or another service, they will explain why and help you with the next step.

Please seek urgent medical advice if you have a high temperature, shivering, pain in your back or sides, or blood in your urine, or if you feel very unwell. Speak to a member of staff if you have any questions about this service.
