Pharmacist Independent Prescriber Scheme. Our pharmacy has a pharmacist independent prescriber, which means that for certain conditions you can be assessed and, where appropriate, prescribed treatment in the pharmacy without needing to see your GP first.
A pharmacist independent prescriber is a pharmacist who has completed additional accredited training and is registered to prescribe. They can assess your symptoms, reach a decision about what is wrong and prescribe medicines within their area of clinical competence.
Your consultation takes place in our private consultation room. The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, your medical history and any medicines you already take. They may carry out a simple examination, such as checking your temperature, looking at your throat or ears, or taking your blood pressure. They will then explain what they have found and talk through the treatment options with you.
If a prescription is the right course of action, it can usually be dispensed for you straight away. If treatment is not needed, the pharmacist will give you advice on looking after yourself and tell you which symptoms to look out for.
The conditions that can be treated under the scheme are limited, and not every problem is suitable for a pharmacy consultation. If the pharmacist feels you need to be seen by your GP, an optician, a dentist or an urgent care service, they will explain why and help you get to the right place.
With your consent, details of your consultation can be shared with your GP surgery so that your health record stays up to date. Speak to a member of staff to find out which conditions we can currently help with, or book a consultation online.
